It is only found in Madagascar, more precisely in the rain forest of the Amber Mountain and in the dry forest of the French Mountain at the northernmost tip of the island. It's just 70 mm long from the nose to the tip of the tail. Leaf chameleons may look inconspicuous, but they are masters of disguise. You'll only recognize them if you look very closely. It is quite adaptable, but always needs running water and prefers humid, dense rainforests between 450 and 915 m above sea level. Boophis pyrrhus was first described by German researchers in 2001. Outwardly, many Madagascar frogs resemble the South American poison dart frogs, and in fact, like their distant relatives, they secrete toxic skin secretions that protect them from predators. The Bamboo Lemur lives in the rainforest and, as its name suggests, feeds almost exclusively on bamboo. However, it only feeds on one particular species: Cathariostachys madagascariensis. The bamboo contains very large amounts of prussic acid. The amounts that a bamboo lemur ingests daily would kill any other mammal. They live exclusively in the narrow, remaining rainforest strip along the east coast. Unfortunately, the remaining habitats are extremely fragmented and isolated from each other, so that the populations hardly mix with each other anymore. In the last 30 years alone, the total population of the species has declined by over 80%. Therefore they are now considered to be threatened with extinction. Black and white ruffed lemurs feed mainly on leaves and fruits.
