Brookesia ebenaui is a species of leaf chameleon. Brookesia ebenaui is a species of leaf chameleon. It is only found in Madagascar, more precisely in the rain forest of the Amber Mountain and in the dry forest of the French Mountain at the northernmost tip of the island. It's just 70 mm long from the nose to the tip of the tail. Leaf chameleons may look inconspicuous, but they are masters of disguise. You'll only recognize them if you look very closely. And even then, they have a few tricks up their sleeve: when threatened, they can play dead and vibrate like a mobile phone when attacked.

Panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) are probabl Panther chameleons (Furcifer pardalis) are probably among the best known reptiles of Madagascar. They shoot insects with their long tongue and have a field of view of 342°. The males of this species are famous for their incredible colors. In fact, they look different in different places! This male lives on Nosy Faly, a small island in the northwest of Madagascar. The population is very poor and many people are afraid of chameleons. When cutting trees and bushes, which are needed by the local people for firewood, probably the tail of this male was injured.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, Madagascar

Boophis pyrrhus is an approximately 20 mm large frog that occurs on the east coast and in the southern highlands of Madagascar. It is quite adaptable, but always needs running water and prefers humid, dense rainforests between 450 and 915 m above sea level. Boophis pyrrhus was first described by German researchers in 2001. Outwardly, many Madagascar frogs resemble the South American poison dart frogs, and in fact, like their distant relatives, they secrete toxic skin secretions that protect them from predators. However, the secretion of Boophis pyrrhus is completely harmless to humans.

The cryptic chameleon lives in the rainforests of the Malagasy highlands. It has characteristic, large so-called occipital lobes on its head. When threatened, it can spread them off the head and thus appears larger and more impressive. In the various distribution regions of the species there are partly different populations, both in colour and appearance, whose taxonomic determination has not yet been entirely resolved.

Golden Bamboo Lemur Hapalemur aureus Ranomafana Na Golden Bamboo Lemur
Hapalemur aureus
Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar

The Golden Bamboo Lemur is threatened with extinction and only counts an estimated 600 individuals in the southern highlands of Madagascar - of which only about 250 are adult. The Bamboo Lemur lives in the rainforest and, as its name suggests, feeds almost exclusively on bamboo. However, it only feeds on one particular species: Cathariostachys madagascariensis. The bamboo contains very large amounts of prussic acid. The amounts that a bamboo lemur ingests daily would kill any other mammal. But in the course of evolution, the gastrointestinal tract of the lemur has become accustomed to the high prussic acid quantities and can cope with them surprisingly well.

Akanin'ny Nofy, eastcoast of Madagascar

Black and white ruffed lemurs are among the most adorable lemurs of Madagascar. They live exclusively in the narrow, remaining rainforest strip along the east coast. Unfortunately, the remaining habitats are extremely fragmented and isolated from each other, so that the populations hardly mix with each other anymore. In the last 30 years alone, the total population of the species has declined by over 80%. Therefore they are now considered to be threatened with extinction.

Black and white ruffed lemurs feed mainly on leaves and fruits. They live in groups and are the only lemurs that build nests in the trees for their young.

This little chameleon from Madagascar is called Brookesia micra and is the smallest reptile in the world. It measures just 20 mm from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail and fits easily with several fellows on a single leaf. It lives on a rocky, hot island called Nosy Hara at the northernmost tip of Madagascar.

Ranomafana, Madagascar

Boophis albilabris is one of the biggest frogs of his family and only occurs in Madagascar. This frog has many shapes - with and without spines on the back, rather brownish or bright green. Common to all are the name-giving white or yellow lips. They live in the rainforest and have difficulty coping with secondary vegetation. Their habitat is enormously threatened by slash-and-burn and deforestation. This model was photographed in Ranomafana in the southern highlands of Madagascar.

Calumma malthe juvenile in a rainforest close to A Calumma malthe juvenile in a rainforest close to Andasibe

Calumma malthe is a gentle chameleon that only occurs in intact rainforests on the east coast of Madagascar. Both sexes of the species do not only wear beautiful colours, but also have so-called occipital lobes on their heads, which they can set up when threatened, making them larger and more impressive. The species is rarely found by travellers, because you have to know exactly where to look. For decades their habitat has been massively threatened by slash-and-burn and logging for coal, firewood and hut construction.
